NEW SCHOOL TAILORS + BOOTLEGGERS
In 2008 we founded Commonwealth Proper to create custom American-made clothing in Philadelphia for the next generation of this country’s movers and shakers. We believed that the “American Gentleman” did, in fact, exist with his own taste, sensibility, and needs. Each custom clothing consultation was accompanied by a glass or two of whiskey. In the beginning, it was usually poured from plastic bottles of Old Crow. Our palettes expanded through our clients introducing us to their favorite whiskies. And many of those brands approached us to help spread the word in our showrooms. We obliged them all and began to wonder: Well, how hard can it be? So, we started to tinker with offering our own house brand. We collaborated with New Liberty Distillery and One Trick Pony, a creative agency, for Moxie Liquid Courage, a cask-strength Bourbon that warmed the soul. Like most good things, it disappeared way too fast. A few years later, we tapped one of our Atlanta clients who was a distiller to create a new whiskey. Enter: the Golden Crow, a southern honey whiskey made in Atlanta and named after the legendary Japanese two-headed crow that came down from heaven to save mankind during a time of strife.
After a few years on hiatus, we are back with our Barrel Select project. Our first foray is a limited edition American Single Malt Whiskey. We aged 100% malted barley in a medium char American White Oak barrel. Our first batch has hints of citrus, vanilla and chocolate. Each bottle is hand-marked with its own barrel and bottle number. Like our custom clothing, each is unique and in limited quantities – only for those Gentlemen Rebels that dare to chart their own path and take the risk into something unknown – AMERICAN Single Malt. When the bottles from this barrel are empty, the whiskey will cease to exist. This first version of our CMMP “bespoke barrel” whiskey will be gone. Forever.
Then it will be on to Barrel #2 . . .
